A Zeiss/Leo 1525 Field-Emission SEM is offered to on-campus and external
users through the Cullen College of Engineering Microscopy Center.
Operating the instrument is facilitated by a graphical user interface. Magnifications up to 100,000 X can be routinely achieved by the casual user. With experience, magnifications up to 750,000 X can be achieved. Planned improvements to the vibration isolation system will bring this capability to well over 1,000,000 X. The SEM is located in room N295A Engineering Building 1.
- An online reservation system is available to reserve time on the machine, for a fee of $22.50 per reservation-hour. Cancellations must be made 24 hours in advance to avoid paying the fee. Commercial users will be charged the average prevailing rate among local SEM service providers.
- New users must be certified by an authorized trainer. The cost of training sessions on the instrument is $45/hour.
- Potential users should sign up on the reservation website. This will create the user account but signing up
for time will be blocked until the user a) has passed the training exam and b) provided a
speedtype number for the account to be charged.
