Research interests:
Polymer and organic ultrathin films. We investigate the design and synthesis of organic macromolecules and oligomers capable of controlled-assembly or self-organization as ultrathin films. This includes functional amphiphile synthesis, polymerization on surfaces, network formation, and preparation of ð-electron conjugated polymers.

Chemotherapy-associated hepatotoxicity in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, 2) Sentinel lymph node mapping in rectal cancer following neoadjuvant chemoradiation, and 3) Resection of metastatic renal cell carcinoma following molecular-targeted therapy. She is also the principal investigator of a Radiation Therapy Oncology Group Trial of intensity-modulated radiation therapy for patients with anal carcinoma. She serves as a co-investigator for the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group Trial of a Phase II trial of neoadjuvant chemoradiation and local excision for uT2uN0 rectal cancer. Two additional areas of research interest include functional and quality of life outcomes following colorectal cancer treatment and application of palliative surgical interventions in patients with advanced malignancies.

I am interested in understanding the neurophysiology of disorders of vocal learning and vocal motor control. My laboratory uses the birdsong system of the songbird zebra finch: 1) to develop and study animal models of dysfluencies such as stuttering; 2) to understand how the brain encodes complex sensory percepts such as vocal sounds; and 3) to investigate neural mechanisms that govern normal and aberrant vocal learning.

Development and application of MRI techniques, such as white matter fiber tracking and functional imaging, in surgical planning of tumor resection, in brain and spinal cord injuries, and in preclinical studies. He is also interested in the exploration of neuronal degeneration and plasticity using advanced MRI techniques, for example in a preclinical functional MRI study using songbirds as a model for vocal learning and speech disorders. Another main project looks at neuronal reorganization of brain networks in patients recovering function after severe brain injury.
