The Institute of
Biomedical Imaging Science (IBIS)
Solicitation for
Membership and Grant Proposals
The Institute for Biomedical
Imaging Science (IBIS) was formed by a memorandum of understanding signed on
November 1, 2006 by and between The Methodist Hospital (TMH), The University of
Houston (UH) and
Cornell
University for and on
behalf of its Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College (WMC).
The goal of IBIS is to create synergies
between the facilities and faculty of the participating institutions that will
attract both peer-reviewed and legislatively targeted research funding as well
as philanthropy, and create scientific advances that would not otherwise have
been achievable by the individual centers.
Faculty at the three participating institutions may be granted
membership to IBIS. A majority vote of
the Steering Committee will be required for membership. For those interested in becoming a member
please send: 1) a statement of intent, 2) a summary of your research interests, 3) a recent CV, and your contact information via
e-mail to your institutional representatives:
We will process the applications
expeditiously.
In order to stimulate
collaborative research IBIS is announcing a competition for travel grants (up
to $10,000) and startup grants (up to $100,000). The purpose of these
grants is to stimulate efforts in the establishments of broadly based
multidisciplinary research programs between the participating institutions.
For consideration, each proposal must name a PI from one participating institution
and Co-PI(s) from one or both other participating institutions. All
investigators should be members of IBIS. Proposals should indicate the ways in which each of them will be involved
in the collaboration. Successful projects should establish effective
collaborations that extend beyond the life of the initial grants. Program Project planning grants ($250,000 or
more) will be available via IBIS in 2008 for the teams that have demonstrated
most progress.
Grant applications will be
evaluated for scientific, technical merit and the relevance of the project to
the interests and mission of IBIS plus the likelihood of competing successfully
for future support by NIH and other extramural funding agencies. All future extramural applications derived
from these proposals must be submitted by one of the participating institutions
as the sponsoring institution. All
proposals should be formatted using NIH style margin and font guidelines for
electronic submissions.
Travel Grants:
A one page proposal with information
on the planned research topic(s), the major investigators and the NIH style
biosketches of the major investigators and a brief budget (up to $10,000)
should be submitted.
Start-Up Grants:
A five page proposal with Specific
Aims, Background and Significance, Preliminary Data (if any) and Research
Design and Methods sections should be submitted. (References should be included but they will
not be counted within the page limits)
In addition, key personnel with
NIH style biosketches and a budget (up to $100,000) should also be submitted.
Preference will be given to
applications that demonstrate:
· Meritorious science,
including innovative ideas that may lead to pace-setting results in biomedical
research.
· Interrelationships
between component projects that result in a greater contribution to the program
goals than if each project were pursued separately.
· Synergistic interactions
between the participating institutions leveraging resources at the
institutions, including those in translational/clinical research.
· A high likelihood that
work will lead to funded extramural support, preferably from the NIH.
· The impact of the
proposed project as a function of cost.
